Is an online education right for me?

Let’s face it. There are practical reasons why people look into online education. The top two are: 1) Time. Between a job, a family, and life, there isn´t enough time to attend school; 2) Money. Times are tough, and more than ever before, saving money has become a priority.

These are not the only reasons. Here are some important factors to note when considering an online education.

1. Flexibility - Online education grants students much flexibility with class schedules and attendance. Students have the freedom to attend class at a time and place most convenient for them.
2. Accessibility - Course material is online and accessible to students 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This allows students the ability to review lectures, notes, discussions and comments whenever needed.
3. Use of Technology - Use of the internet for class attendance, information research, and communication with other students and faculty provides valuable experience with technology skills critical to business in the digital age.
4. Communication - Other students, faculty, and professors are readily available via IM, chat rooms, and email. Not having to deal with office hours and school schedules makes approaching classmates and professors much easier.
5. Money - Save money. Students enrolled in online education do not have to commute to school nor do they pay for housing.
6. Time - The time it takes a student to achieve his or her degree is only limited by the student´s ability to fulfill the credit requirement. This may take as long as needed or as short as 18 months.

In the fall of 2007, nearly 4 million students were taking at least one online course; a 12 percent increase from the previous year (Sloan-C 2008)
